The Supplement Guide

The Spelled Hand

Choosing supplements as close to whole food as possible, and the discernment to know when you need none at all. Nine principles from a body that became my own laboratory.

Capsule-filling machines need a mix of substances to run properly. A few unicorn companies are finding machines that don't, but 99.9% of supplements contain fillers. That is why the ingredient list is the most honest part of any label. I always read it.

My rule is simple: the fewer ingredients between me and the nutrient, the better. When a label reads like a chemistry set, I put it back.

Hard no: titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, artificial colorants, hydrogenated oils, aspartame, sucralose, synthetic ascorbic acid, soy lecithin, gelatin (unless free-range and grass-finished).

Okay / ish: rosemary extract, citrus pectin, microcrystalline cellulose, tocopherols, carnauba wax, sunflower lecithin, monk fruit, natural flavor made by evaporating organic fruit juice.

I say this as a fan of both ends of the spectrum: cutting-edge biohacking and ancient wisdom. I have spent money on the most expensive supplements and technologies. I have also drunk my own urine. Yuck. And yet the most effective options are often free, or almost free.

Ask yourself what form of probiotics your body would actually prefer: a pill, or homemade sauerkraut made with your presence, creation, and intention? My body prefers living food, made by myself when possible. Like the chives on your windowsill, you water them, you relate to them. Better for your body than store-bought wheatgrass.

Nature is your ally. Pay attention to the weeds that grow "coincidentally" in your garden. They might be exactly what you need, nature responding to you.

Cooking is ritual. You create magic with your presence. Foraging bypasses supplement costs entirely, and berries picked by your spelled hand are better than anything store-bought.

Most of the effect you are chasing from supplements comes from what you don't consume rather than what you do. Remove first. Add later, if at all.

Hard truth: ditch fast food and you will need fewer antioxidants. Simple as that. Stop pouring fuel on the fire and you will not need as much water to put it out.

Don't overeat and don't overmix. As a maximalist, I learned this the hard way. Half the dosage often works better than double. Your body is not a warehouse; it is a living system with limits worth respecting.

Whether your herb comes from an industrial lot in China or a local regenerative farm makes a massive difference in how your body actually uses those compounds. The plant remembers the soil it grew in. So will you.

Have a plan. Your body cannot utilize nutrients if it is drowning in heavy metals. Detox and environmental cleanup come first. Otherwise, trendy pills just overload your system. Or worse, improper detox creates super-resistant parasites.

Get tested. Get assessed. Then supplement with intention.

Your skin isn't just a barrier, it's a gateway. Some nutrients bypass your digestive system entirely and may work better that way.

Magnesium absorbs better through your skin than your gut. You can use transdermal iodine and glutathione. And yes, red light from the sun counts too, your skin is drinking it in. Why swallow a pill when your body has other doors?

If you can't come up with more than one solid reason, and no specialist told you to take it, you probably don't need it. Don't overburden your body just because something is trending.

For 20-year-old me: no supplement will help you unless you dissolve the root cause. There are tools along the way, sure. But once you face the truth inside and adjust your lifestyle, you will feel incredible with none of them. Even with zero protein powder (although some taste delicious).

Some products genuinely helped. Very few, but they are real. I keep an updated list of what I actually use, and reach for, when food alone won't reach.
